Effects of Fumigation Methods and Pretreatment on the Longevity of Cut Lilies Exported

Abstract
Effects of fumigation methods (traditional fumigation: methyl bromide of 48 g¡¤m^(-3) at 20¡É for 2 hrs, combined fumigation: methyl bromide/phosphide of 7/3 g¡¤m^(-3) at 10¡É for 3 hrs) at the pre-shipping stage with or without pretreatment on the quality and longevity of cut lilies (Lilium Oriental Hybrid ¢¥Marco Polo¢¥) exported to Japan and transportation environment were investigated. The first and third florets of cut lilies in control (no fumigation) with pretreatment extended its longevity about one more day and opened completely at the end of 1 st floret blooming, respectively, as compared with those florets of control without pretreatment. In the case of 1 st floret, the vase life of pretreated flowers was generally longer than that of non-pretreated flowers, regardless of fumigation methods. The longevity of fumigated flowers was a little bit shortened as compared to those of control but there was no distinctly visible phytotoxicity symptoms in both fumigation treatments. However, the treatment of combined fumigation with pretreatment showed about 90% flowering in 3rd floret at the time when lst floret was completely withered whereas that of traditional fumigation showed only 25% flowering in the same floret. Therefore, it could be postulated that flower damage by fumigation may profoundly increase if trandition fumigation was taken at the quarantine of exported country on 3 days after harvest. It was concluded that combined fumigation with pretreatment on the pre-shipping stage provided alternative method to minimize the loss of quality and longevity of cut lilies without serious damage from fumigation in the quarantine of exported country. According to results of temperature and relative humidity changes during exportation, temperature was a little less but RH was 5% higher at the inside margin than the inside center of box.
